"Many are left with the impression that between Maes and Alistair, Maes is the more genial and compassionate figure. That could not be farther from the truth. Maes is, in fact, the more ruthless Mordechai, with a keen mind focused on continuing the War for the Balance in whatever means possible, with whatever means possible.

Maes’ view of the world is incredibly ordered and strict: all things have their place, and all things can be easily divided into “good” and “evil”, “functional” and “useless”. Personal attachments, filial bonds, emotional resonance and the like are always secondary to the cause. He is, in short, the kind of man who will not hesitate to kill a family member, should said family member prove to be evil by Maes’ definition."
